Spanish

At Lowtown Primary School we believe that the learning of a foreign language in primary school provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for all pupils. Census reports have revealed that Spanish is the second most-spoken language in the world and so we have chosen to teach Spanish at Lowtown. We provide opportunities for children to develop linguistic competence, extend their knowledge of how language works and explore differences and similarities between Spanish and English. We believe that the learning of an additional language helps students have a greater understanding of English grammar, linguistics and vocabulary through parallels and comparisons to Spanish. Teaching enables children to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and makes them able to understand and respond to the spoken language, both in speech and in writing. Learning another language raises awareness of the multilingual and multi-cultural world and introduces an international dimension to pupils’ learning, giving them an insight into their own culture and those of others. Spanish at Lowtown provides a medium for cross-curricular links, and for the reinforcement of knowledge, skills and understanding developed in other subjects. We realise that introducing young children to a second language provides them with a chance at greater fluency and access to countless professional opportunities in later life.

At Lowtown we regard Spanish as an essential, integral component of the whole curriculum and ensure our children in Key Stage 2 have taught weekly sessions.
